MOTORCYCLE RIDERS IN 2008
LEGISLATIVE SESSION
**********************************************************************************
ABATE of Maryland, Inc. (ABATE)
successfully worked with the Maryland Legislature to pass three laws
to benefit Maryland motorcycle riders. Beginning July 1, 2008,
“Failure to Yield Right of Way” penalties for drivers whose actions
contributes to an accident that results in the death or serious
bodily injury of another will increase from $70 to a possible $1000
and up to 180 days loss of license. Beginning June 1, 2008 it will
be legal to use auxiliary lighting on motorcycles thereby increasing
their visibility to other drivers. And on October 1, 2008 Maryland
joins the majority of states by making motorcycle license plates 7
inches wide by 4 inches high which will enable them to actually fit
into the many license plate frames that are available nationwide.
For more than 30-years ABATE has worked with the Maryland
legislature, the Motor Vehicle Administration, Maryland Department
of Transportation, State Highway Administration and various police
departments on behalf of Maryland motorcyclists. Legislators in the
House and Senate recognize ABATE as the face of motorcyclists in
Maryland. ABATE is respected by the senators and delegates for our
professionalism, knowledge of issues, tact and decorum.
State Director, Neal Ackerson had this to say about ABATE’s 2008
legislative successes:
“This has been a great year for ABATE, but more importantly for
Maryland motorcyclists. Safety of all motorcycle riders is our
number one priority. The right-of-way bill and auxiliary lighting
bill are steps in that direction. I would like every Maryland
motorcyclist to know that ABATE continues to work on your behalf.”
Added Ackerson, “None of this would be possible without the
thousands of ABATE members statewide. I encourage all Maryland
motorcyclists to join ABATE. Membership is open to all
motorcyclists, regardless of the type or make of motorcycle you
ride, or even IF you ride.”

ABATE of Maryland, Inc. is Maryland’s only motorcycle safety
and legislative advocacy organization. We have been promoting
motorcycle safety and rider education for more than 30 years.

Motorcycle Awareness Campaign
In recent years there has been a troubling
increase in the number of injuries and fatalities to motorcyclists due to
accidents that occur when another vehicle violates the right-of-way of a
motorcycle rider. This is a particularly poignant issue for ABATE of
Maryland, Inc. members because of the recent accident that took the life of
our State Director, Marty Schultz.
In an attempt to reduce these types of
accidents state-wide, we have stepped up our involvement by sponsoring our
own awareness campaigns. Although we have worked with the Maryland
state government for many years to promote the notion of awareness
campaigns, we realize the need to supplement the government-sponsored,
seasonal public service announcements with grass-roots, year-round campaigns
of our own.
Our initial awareness campaign is to get
'Look for Motorcycles' yard signs placed in yards state-wide. The goal
for these signs is to introduce the notion in the minds of automobile
drivers that motorcycle riders are on the road.

The purpose for these signs is two-fold; first to promote motorcycle awareness and
second to raise money for future
grass-roots awareness campaigns sponsored by the motorcycling community.
For those who are interested in obtaining
and displaying a yard sign, we are asking a minimum $10 donation. The
money will be earmarked specifically to re-coup what was spent on the
initial sign printing cost, re-order signs as needed, and ultimately to fund
future campaigns.
To obtain a sign, call the ABATE of
Maryland, Inc. state office at (800) 843-0252 (in Maryland) or (410) 263-9185.
